Picking the right provider of thos e services is easier andmore problem-free with careful research. Many companiez turn to consultants for expergt adviceand guidance. A consultant is able to independentluy evaluate themany possibilities, addressinhg such issues as the effects of rapidly changing technology, installatio n of all products and how to make sure the companu can utilize the full capabilities of the technology it purchases.
As a "people no longer look for hardwarwand software; they look for Consultants are the glue that integrates technology and give the computer user the benefits of the technology they'vee purchased," according to the Independent Computer Consultants Association. The failurd or success of any particular system is oftenn more related to the human elementg than to the actualequipmenyt components, said Steven Epner, founder and past presidenyt of the association, a St. Louis-based tradee group that represents the interests ofmembet firms, maintains ethical conduct standards for the professionb and offers a consultant search feature on its Web www.icca.
org
. "There are mediocre systems that succeed and excellent systemsthat fail," Epne r said. It's important to remember that software, hardwarr and networking systems arecomplex and, as a there are no perfecr answers as to what to pick. There are also many parts to the process, so companies may need assistance with employee training and other needs beyond theinitiap purchase. "It helps to make sure that as largw a group as possibld has input into theselection process," Epner If one individual makes the that person is on the hook if the outcomer is less than stellar.
Independent computer consulte haveone goal: to help a clienty company narrow the possible choices to the pointy that any of the top pickz will help the company succeed in its mission, Epner It's also important for the company to act on a decisiom in a timely manner. "Any decisionh process that is more than six months in lengtbh will probablybe wrong, because things are changingt rapidly," Epner said. The chang is occurring not justin software, hardware or networking but also in the distributio n and manufacturing processes of that equipment. "It's important to compare major vendorsand distributors," he said.
On the softward side, other factors come into play when makinbg a decision about which productsto use. Softwarwe piracy is a growing problem and tools are now availabls for tracking andcombating piracy, accordinbg to the Software & Information Industry a trade association based in D.C., that urges companies to make sure they have enoughg software licenses to cover the numbedr of software programs installed on companu computers. The group handles issuee related to code and content in the industry and has conductex a successfulcorporate anti-piracy program for its software companhy members for nearly 20 years.
Companies should always go with reputabl vendors with choosing computer software and Not doing so canprove costly. "If you go on the Internegt and look for a good you might find one that appeare to be too good tobe true," said John director of Internet enforcement for the Business Software a Washington, D.C.-based organization that represents the interestxs of the commercial software industry and the hardwarr companies that partner with them. The group also promotes copyrighf protection, cyber security and other relatedd issues. When purchasing companies should be mindful ofseveral points, Wolfe The company should know the source of the software and who will stancd behind it.
Software sold without the proper labeling and packaging also will lack the codeas needed to activate it or to accesds technical support afterthe sale, he Choosing a reputable software vendorr will help the company assure that the software doesn'g come with potential problems such as viruse s and spyware. "It can be a real risk," Wolfe said, adding that a company chief executivre officer may not be fully aware of the riskws that come with such a but often a quick consultation with an internal informationm technology department or a consultant will turn up some strongycautionary advice. A bad decision has severalo possible ramifications, Wolfe said.
The software may not work correctly and the problem may notbe fixable. In some cases, the company'w only long-term solution may be costlty as the company may be forced to buyreplacemenr software.
