The Memphis-based discount retailer reported salesof $134.78 million for May, down 6 percent compared to saleas of $143.4 million in May 2008. Thesd numbers include Fred’s (NASDAQ: FRED) closing 74 underperformingg stores and23 pharmacies. Excludinbg those stores, Fred’s salezs increased 1 percent compared tolast May. Comparables store sales in Mayrose 0.2 down compared to 3.4 percenft in the same periodc last year. For the first four fiscal monthsof 2009, the company reported total sales of $593.21 million, down 2.4 percent compared to $607.67 million for the same year-ago period.
excluding stores closed in sales from ongoing stores increasecd 4 percent compared to thesame four-month periods last year. On a comparable storse basis, year-to-date sales increaser 2.1 percent compared to 2.4 perceng last year. Fred’s opened one new pharmachy in May. Fred’s operates 666 discounft merchandise stores, including 24 franchised storezs nationwide. Shares closed down 12 cent s to $14.22 per sharre Wednesday.
