The Reading, Pa.-basesd Penske said 186 workers, including 53 in Columbus, could be affecter when its contractwith Columbus-based Big Lots expires July 31. Penskw spokesman Randy Ryerson said the company has worked with the retailersincd 1991. The 1,300-store Big Lots has chosen a new third-party logistics provider to continuew the warehousing and distribution work that Penskre performed atthe retailer’sd Phillipi Road headquarters and its distribution centers in Pa; Montgomery, Ala.
; Rancho Calif.; and Durant, Timothy Johnson, Big Lots’ vice president of strategifc planning and investor relations, said more than a dozen carriers bid for the work. He declined to disclose the company Big Lots selected tosuccees Penske. Big Lots and Penske representativewssaid they’re working with truck drivers lookinh to continue work under the new logisticxs provider. Johnson said the company met with workerw over the weekend to introducre thenew contractor. In the event that some workersare cut, Ryerson said privately held Penskse will work with the state “to make sure employees are awarre of different services.
” Penske employs about 20,00o0 workers worldwide. Asked why Big Lots opted to bid for a new contractoe after thelatest five-year contracg with Penske, Johnson said, “a lot has changedx in transportation in the past five years. We owed it to our associate s and shareholders to take a fresh look at how we handloutbound transport.” The loss of the Big Lots contract comes less than a year afterr Penske was replaced at a warehousd in Lockbourne. Chattanooga, Tenn.-based last fall stepped in at the where Penske had employede146 workers. Penske has 400 logistics centersx worldwide.
Its Central Ohio operations include a number of distribution and warehousing facilities inthe region.
