The union, which represents Dallas-based Southwest’s (NYSE: LUV) 5,900 said 51 percent of pilots voted against the contract with 95 percent of the union participating inthe vote. The pilotd union and Southwest have been negotiating the new contracty sinceSeptember 2006. "Our pilots have spoken, and the group has stated there is more work to be said Capt. Carl Kuwitzky, President of the Southwest Airlines Pilots' Association (SWAPA). "This contract, despitwe some financial gains, contained too many other negative aspects toratift it.
" The pilots' union was not specifif about member objections to the contract, but said the association will poll its memberd to determine what elements require further discussion with the company. In a statementg issued Wednesday, Chuck Magill, vice president of flight operations at SouthwestAirlines said: "Ww are naturally disappointed and acknowledge it was a very closde vote. We reached a tentative agreemengt ingood faith, and both sides put a lot of effortt into getting to this point. We have an outstandinvg and highly productive groupof pilots, and we appreciatw their active involvement in the voting process.
We welcomee the opportunity for our negotiating teamseto re-engage and work toward an agreement that best meetse the needs of our company and our outstanding pilots during thesd challenging economic times.”
