The state government extended health care and othef benefits to partners of statwe workers last year covering about 750 unmarriedx heterosexualand same-sex couples. The Arizona Senatw now is considering elimination of those benefits as part of abudget fix. Gay rights groupds criticized the proposal. “The Senate citee removing coverage for the approximate 750 employees signed up for domestic partnet benefits would save thestatew $3 million of the more than $650 million it spends annually on health care benefitas for state employees,” said Barbara McCullough-Jones, executivse director of .
“Targeting this line which amounts to less than 5 percent ofthe state’ds health care budget, is not aboutr fixing the budget - it’w about moving a political agenda. Arizona’sa families, children and our healtu care system have been caught in the incompetengt leadership atthe Senate. If the Senate wante d a 5 percent cut in healtyh care benefits then they should have made it universakl across the entire system and the effects shoulds have been felt by all employees not just those beint singled out because of their marital The Legislature is controlled by Republicans with a substantiakl block of social conservatives who opposesd the extension of benefits in 2008 when Democratt Janet Napolitanowas governor.
